All of my life I suffered from a condition called polycystic ovarian syndrome, or PCOS, and I cured it with diet. This hormonal condition affects about 4 million women in the US alone. While there are synthetic drugs meant to control it, they often don’t thoroughly eliminate symptoms and many of us end up looking to diet and herbs for the cure that our doctors never offered. What is PCOSPCOS is a hormonal imbalance. In women with PCOS the ovaries produce too much male hormones (androgens), making it difficult for the ovaries to release an egg. The increase in androgens can cause a host of embarrassing and debilitating symptoms. Symptoms of PCOSIrregular or absent periods. Pelvic pain. Cysts on the ovaries. Infertility. Depression. Acne. Weight gain. Facial hair growth (hirsutism)Sleep apnea. Causes of PCOSLike with every other modern health condition PCOS can be avoided or controlled by diet and lifestyle changes. While there are many factors which can predispose a woman to develop PCOS such as obesity, genetics, and exposure to synthetic estrogen, insulin resistance is the root cause of polycystic ovarian syndrome, which is a totally avoidable and treatable condition. Insulin resistance comes about from a constant need for the body to lower blood sugar with insulin. In time, the cells become desensitized to it. When cells become resistant to insulin glucose must make its way to the liver to be converted to fat instead of being used as energy by the cells. Now you have excess insulin floating around in the bloodstream. This free- floating insulin stimulates the ovaries to produce excess testosterone. This prevents the ovaries from releasing an egg each month (a leading cause of infertility). Hormones are in delicate balance. When one gets out of whack, the others must compensate in order to keep us alive (this is called homeostasis). This “compensation” results in symptoms. Xenoestrogens. Pollution, exposure to plastics, other chemicals, and conventional beef treated with synthetic hormones can also contribute to hormonal imbalances because they contain xenoestrogens (synthetic or environmental estrogens). These environmental estrogens wreak havoc on our delicate hormonal processes by tricking the body into thinking that there is too much estrogen, causing it to produce excessive amounts of other hormones in attempt to balance it out. The Vicious Cycle of PCOS“The secretion of insulin from pancreatic beta cells is a complex process involving the integration and interaction of multiple external and internal stimuli. Thus, nutrients, hormones, neurotransmitters, and drugs all activate — or inhibit — insulin release.” From Medscape.“An extended period of physical or psychological stress, will produce stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline, that can interfere with the synthesis of the brain neurotransmitter, Serotonin.” From The Seratonin Connection. High levels of insulin can cause the body to dump magnesium into the urine which is needed in order to produce serotonin. Without high enough levels of serotonin we can feel depressed and are subject to food cravings (refined carbohydrates make tryptophan more available for the body to utilize which is a precursor of serotonin). Fluctuating blood sugar levels can trigger the release of adrenaline which causes the liver to produce glucose in expectation of the brain needing extra fuel (flight or fight). This can in turn trigger the release of insulin which, when not properly utilized and is left free- floating in the blood, can increase testosterone, leading to all the nasty symptoms of PCOS. Excessive Weight training or low body weight can also increase the production of stress hormones and, consequently, androgens. Food allergies and intolerances compromise the absorption of nutrients, causing a cascade of symptoms. Even if you’re doing everything right with diet and lifestyle, if you don’t absorb the nutrients, you can’t heal. Of course, it is often nutritional deficiencies which cause allergies in the first place, but once they’ve surfaced the nutritional deficiencies continue because the body can’t absorb the nutrients it needs to heal from them. Many women who have PCOS also have food sensitivities. This is a really common correlation. A high carbohydrate diet, allergies, and a diet which includes lots of processed, dead foods can, in time, imbalance gut flora. For some, the extra fiber that we have been told to increase is actually a problem for people with digestive problems and it can be helpful to cut down or even eliminate it altogether for a time. How to Control PCOSMost women will find that a simple move to the Paleo diet will balance their hormones and free them from the ugly symptoms of PCOS. But for some of us the road to recovery is a little longer because our bodies have been damaged for so long and by so many different variables. The Paleo diet eliminates the elements of modern eating that leads to insulin resistance. These foods include grains, added sugars, artificial chemicals, and processed oils. And it adds back into the diet many of the missing links to recovery like protein, saturated fat, and added nutrients. Some women will need to be more strict than others but in general there are some things to avoid when recovering from hormonal imbalances. Keep carbohydrate intake low, no more than 8. For many it may need to be as low as zero. Avoid foods that you are intolerant to. Avoid vegetable oils to balance omega. Avoid dairy. Avoid grains. Avoid processed foods of all kinds. Avoid artificial ingredients. Things to help ensure adequate nutrition and recovery: Eat organs. Drink bone broth. Eat oysters and other highly nutritious seafood. Eat eggs (if well tolerated). Take cod liver oil, magnesium supplements, and B- vitamins. Get sunshine. Exercise lightly every single day. Eat lots of saturated fat to avoid cravings and improve mood. Because they’re apparently too embarrassed to admit what they eat (even to themselves), yet not too embarrassed to be and stay fat as a result. You’re Unknowingly Getting It Wrong Somewhere. Now I’m not accusing you of being an underestimater, or a bad measurer, or a liar, or someone who’s just bad at counting. I’m just telling you the facts. And the fact is, weight loss always happens when a caloric deficit is present. So if you claim to consistently be eating the right amount of calories yet still aren’t losing weight, then you’re simply not in a caloric deficit and had to have screwed something up somewhere. You’re exercising like crazy and burning tons and tons of calories through cardio and weight training and are therefore in the caloric deficit you need to be in for weight loss to occur. Yet, for some unknown reason, you’re still not losing weight. What could it possibly be? How’s that for a recipe for disaster? So you know the “tons” of calories you assumed you’ve burned doing cardio? Yeah, that didn’t actually happen. See, even though we often use these words interchangeably, there’s a difference between weight loss and fat loss. Fat loss is always fat. Weight loss however can be fat, muscle, water, glycogen, poop or all of the above. And since most people only monitor their fat loss by monitoring their weight on the scale, your true progress can be temporarily hidden (this is extra true for women on a monthly basis). This is why it’s a good idea to do more than just weigh yourself. For example, take measurements, take pictures, and get your body fat percentage measured. Of course, the difference between “weight loss” and “fat loss” doesn’t change the calories in vs calories out equation. Nor does it change the fact that a caloric deficit is still the one and only requirement here. It just means that it’s possible to lose fat while gaining something else, and it can make it seem as though you haven’t lost any. BUT. Meaning, if week after week is passing and you’re still not losing any weight, it’s HIGHLYunlikely that you just so happen to be simultaneously gaining some other form of weight (like muscle) this consistently. Instead, it’s MUCH more likely that you’re just eating too many calories, not creating a caloric deficit, and are just not losing any fat, period. If so, you’ve hit the dreaded weight loss plateau and that can only mean one thing: you’re still eating too many calories. Let me explain. There’s a few reasons for why this happens and why it’s so common, but it would honestly take its own article to fully explain (don’t worry, it’s on my to- do list). But the gist of it is simple. Eat a little less (or burn a little more) and you’ll magically break that plateau. This is one of those subjects that’s going to need WAY more than a quick mention in an article to properly cover. You might be thinking how am I going to be full on just one bowl of food that small? Not to worry you are not limited to only one bowl, but every time you finish your bowl you have to consciously get more food. You pick what you want to eat and how much of it. By doing this you actually pick much much less food than someone would naturally serve you. Vegetables are your main course. Vegetables dishes are what two of your three plates on your table are. For example you might have one plate of a cucumber dish, one of corn & carrots, and then another with ribs. If you wanted one night to have diced potatoes, chicken, and eggplant that would also be okay. We were not fans of vegetables before either, but find a few dishes that your whole family loves and rotate those. Trust us. Cut down on your meat & dairy. We eat very little meat. Most Chinese eat very little meat because it is expensive. We have opted out of eating lots of meat because it isn’t the main course of a Chinese diet and that is what we wanted. We found that meat is actually harder on the digestive system than we ever thought. After a night of heavy meat eating we all feel a little more lethargic. If you love meat, then don’t cut down too much, but be conscience of how much meat you are eating versus veggies. If you are worried about the nutritional aspect of it make sure you introduce different protein dishes that are not meat. There are tons out there. We eat very little dairy. It was hard at first coming from the cheese head state of Wisconsin. Cut it down and try to limit it to eggs, milk and yogurt. You will be surprised at how awesome you will start feeling. Use chopsticks to eat. You don’t know how to use them. Well watch this little tutorial and then practice away. Remember practice makes perfect, JUST DO IT! We love eating with chopsticks and wonder why we didn’t use them more at home. They are so cheap to buy and are actually lots of fun once you get going. Our 4 year old Lupita now eats all of her food with chopsticks too and she is left handed. You eat a lot slower, A LOT. I still have seen people shovel food with chopsticks so I know it can be done, but for most of us it is a lot harder to do so. Introduce rice and noodles into your meals. A Chinese diet includes a lot of rice and noodles. So our daily diet is no different, we eat rice and noodles 3 times a day. We have grown to love it. We feel like our meal isn’t complete if we don’t have some. White rice and white noodles is the color of choice. The Chinese actually feel that brown rice is in the same category as the plague, they avoid it at all costs and find it a bit insulting. What about all of the calories and the carbs in white rice? These people have been eating it for thousands of years and look better, live longer, and are healthier than anyone else. So I will trust them and stick with my WHITE rice. Don’t fix it if it ain’t broken! Eat your left overs – don’t waste food or the money you spent on it. The Chinese know how to recycle and reuse things like no other society I have ever experienced. Coming from a consuming/disposing society this has been an eye opener. I will admit I really don’t enjoy left overs. I am not sure where my hatred for yesterday’s food comes from, but it has been there for sometime. Now we don’t make enough food to feed an army, we just make enough and if there are some left overs they don’t turn gross in the fridge over night. I am guessing it is because there isn’t pounds of butter or grease so the food looks very similar to what it did the day before. We rarely throw out food. Don’t deprive yourself of everything – just don’t gobble it. Don’t think that we just sit around eating carrots and celery all day and that is how we lost all of our weight. We eat food we crave and love too. I am a sucker for a coke and a snickers bar. I don’t want to know how many calories are in there or how many carbohydrates. But I have one of my power pick me up doses about twice a week at least. Some afternoons I feel like I just need a little something to get me through the day and I run down to the convenience store and pick up my little snack. We crave Mc. Donald’s and so do our kids, so about once a week we have our American treat. We either choose Mc. Donald’s or KFC. It is much more expensive to eat MCD’s here than it is in the US, so that keeps us away too. We do not deprive ourselves and feel bad about eating some food that we know is extremely bad for us. Anyone knows that depriving yourself of the little joys in life will only throw you off the wagon sooner. Don’t keep a stocked pantry of snacks or “just in case food”We come from a family that keeps food around in case the Apocalypse comes or maybe the next group of teenage boys. The problem with keeping all sorts of yummy food around is that you eat it when you aren’t suppose to. You might have will power, but we don’t!! Especially Zeek, he will go and snack on just about anything he can dig up at 1. So we have eliminated having snacks around all together. If you have kids you know that they can and want to eat many more snacks than we do. Remember, you are teaching them their eating habits now. When their metabolism dies like ours has they will begin to pack on the pounds and not know why. This is the time to teach them about healthy eating and snacking habits. Everyone in China I encounter grabs an apple or some yummy fruit to snack on. That is considered their sweet, good food for thought. Don’t use too many bottled spices, natural spices are best and really are all that you need. This might sound odd, but it is true. We use to have about 3. I admit that I didn’t know how to properly use 2. In our Chinese diet we use about 4 or five different spices in total. They are ginger, garlic, oyster sauce, chives, and soy sauce. The ginger, garlic and chives are cut freshly and put into the dishes. Why not use fresh seasons if you can. We believe it has helped with bringing out the natural flavor of our food and made all of our veggies extra yummy. Yup that is it!! No insane pills or equipment to buy, just a little common sense really. How can you not love it! It might sound just too easy, but we are living proof that it works.
